Don’t Take My Word For This...

Listen closely to yourself today. Do you notice anything about the language you use? Does it feel a little off?

Here is why I ask:

Years ago, maybe 20 years ago, I saw an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show and her guest that day was Andrew Weil, a physician who has long been a strong advocate of integrative medicine. He was likely promoting a new self-help book at the time when he said something that continues to serve me well as a guiding principle.

He said, “Your heart hears your own voice first”.

That literally stopped me in my tracks.  My world view suddenly shifted, and as you probably know, when that happens there is no going back. There is a penetrating clarity in moments like that, and for me, it confirmed my sense of self-sovereignty. It alerted me to pay more attention to my language because it could be a weapon that backfires in more ways than I ever imagined.

There are times when I can see other people’s energy fields, so I can tell you that when I hear someone say something self-critical, I also see their heart chakra respond like an ameba - closing in on itself. In fact, there are times when their aura collapses!  It can be quite dramatic. But here is something even more amazing: my own heart responds in the same way. Even if I don’t like that person! Isn’t that interesting?

Over the years it has become clear that there are two sides of the coin Dr. Weil slipped into my hand that day, and it reveals a deep and vital juxtaposition of truths we humans have apparently lost sight of through many millennia of misknowing.

One side of the coin shows that anything you say to yourself, out loud or just internally, takes precedence over whatever anyone else says to you. In other words, no one can talk you out of your own self-judgements. If you call yourself a fool, your heart hears it as fact. In the same way, if you tell yourself that you did a good job, the satisfaction you experience at that moment is priceless.  After that, there can be no such thing as failure! Your mind may try to tell you otherwise, but which do you choose to listen to – your mind or your heart? If something feels off about your words or actions, you should not simply dismiss it. If there is a discrepancy between what you feel and what you are saying, notice it. Pay attention. Make a correction. I call that truing up, and it is how you can come into lasting alignment.  It’s like training a muscle. Develop this skill and you take hold of the steering wheel of your life.

The other side of the coin is this: whatever you say to another, your own heart hears it first!  Your own heart takes the first hit. The brunt of the energy lands locally. The next time you scold your child, think about that. If you don’t feel a oneness with your own child, you may have a lot of work to do.

I truly believe that the heart is a sacred vessel, our own personal Holy Grail. Tuning into the reactions of your heart is the most important thing you can do for yourself every day. Your true heart, your sacred heart, does not know the difference between you and everyone else.

Don’t take my word for any of this. When you speak, listen consciously and see how it feels to you. That is a huge responsibility, I know, but I promise you have nothing to lose.

Are you ready to take it on?
